Who I am…

I have been working as a social worker with refugees for 8 years and have also worked as a fashion stylist. My love for humanitarian work has resulted in submerging myself in the endless information cycle regarding social issues. I read/listen/watch, go to readings and demonstrations. I have always had a secret wish to become a journalist, but always felt that, with no journalistic background it was impossible. But the news since october 2023 has changed my view of journalism. I think unless you’re independent, the truth is not always portrayed, if it’s not in line with the interests of the network you work for.

My journey has always been driven by a passion for both social justice and fashion. These two passions led me to begin my career as a fashion stylist, where I explored the power of personal expression through style. As my commitment to human rights deepened, I transitioned into social work, focusing on the impact of oppression on individuals and communities. Today, my work is dedicated to advocating for human dignity & equality and blending my creativity with a strong sense of social responsibility. Here, you'll find a space where fashion meets advocacy, and self-expression is a form of empowerment.

So this is me, Nienke, trying my shot. Writing about what I read, see and hear and showing my work along the way.

In the words of the amazing @mehdirhasan
“If one person says it’s raining and another says the sun shines, it’s not your job as a journalist to quote both, but to look outside to see who is right.”
